The Accra Regional Police Command today arrested 29 persons in a mosque at Nyamekye Darkuman in Accra for breaching the social distancing protocol.

According to the Command’s spokeswoman, Efia Tenge, the suspects said they had assembled for an Islamic marriage activity at the mosque but were overwhelmed by the number of persons who turned up.

They have been released on bail after their caution statements were taken.

They are expected to appear in court in the course of the week as their activities in the mosque went contrary to laid down rules.

Some 49 people were also arrested at Akaporiso, a suburb in Obuasi in the Ashanti region during a wedding ceremony for defying the president’s directive on social gatherings.

Coronavirus

The President in a national address on Sunday, March 15, 2020, banned all public gatherings including conferences, funerals, political rallies, church activities and other related events to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

 

 

In a release by the Director of Communications, the ban on social and public gatherings has also been extended for a period of two weeks.
